I've been using #vim for years, and I used to see having it configured just the way I like it as a badge of honor. But I've been reading/thinking about the Unix philosophy of composable tools, and I'm not sure I want to keep using it as a general practice.
I've been using classic vi for a while now, and I like it's comparative simplicity, but it's got some real problems:
- tags don't work (or at least I haven't got them working)
- hitting ESC in command mode seems to execute whatever happens to be in the command buffer
- autoindent is a bit too primitive, preferring to mix tabs and spaces rather than consistently use whatever the file already does
So maybe I'll put together a patch set?
And anyway, something like ed(1) with a visual mode, ctags, and autoindent might be my sweet spot
